Requirements & Prerequisites

Course and degree requirements:

Introductory Courses

ENGL 1483-1493 (or 1413 and 1423) “Writing and Reading Critically” meet the Arts Core requirement for 6h of English at the 1000 level. 

Any two of ENGL 1213 or 1223 “Composition”, or ENGL 1603 "Digital Literacy" meet the Arts Core requirement for 6h of English at the 1000 level. However,  successful completion DOES NOT allow students to enroll in upper-level English literature or creative writing courses.

ENGL 1313/1323 “Composition for Second Language Students” DO NOT count toward the Arts Core requirement of 6h of English. Also, successful completion of ENGL 1313/1323 and/or ENGL 2313 DOES NOT allow students to enroll in upper-level English literature or creative writing courses. However, students whose first language is not English ARE PERMITTED to count these courses toward the Arts Core second language requirement. See the Academic Calendar for details.

 

Upper-Level English

All 2000-and 3000-level English courses are non-sequential and open to any Acadia student who has completed ENGL 1483-1493 (ENGL 1413/1423) “Writing and Reading Critically” with a grade of C- or better.*  

4000-level seminars are usually restricted to third-and fourth-year Majors and Honours students, though students completing a Minor may sometimes be admitted with permission of the instructor.
*The exception is Advanced Creative Writing for which a portfolio and permission of the instructor are also required.

English Majors

English majors must complete at least 84h with a C- or better, including the courses they offer in support of the requirements of the English Core, 18h of English electives, and their Minor.  A program GPA of 2.0 and a total of 120 credit hours is required for graduation.

English Honours

A program GPA of 3.0 is required both to declare Honours and to graduate with an Honours degree.  A total of 120 credit hours is required for graduation.  Honours students must achieve a grade of B- or better in each course offered toward their English program.
