Scholarships and Assistantships

The following are available to undergraduates in the Department of English and Theatre. Graduate students should consult the MA in English page.

Scholarships and Awards

The University offers various scholarships to incoming and current students, and, in addition, the Department of English and Theatre has several scholarships available only to students enrolled as English or Theatre majors including the prestigious Bittner Scholarship. English recipients are chosen by a committee of English Department faculty members and Theatre recipients by a committee of Theatre faculty members.

More information can be found on the Scholarships and Financial Aid website at https://www2.acadiau.ca/student-services/scholarships-financial-aid.html.

Student Assistantships

Student Assistantships are usually available in the Department of English and Theatre on a competitive basis to students taking a Major or Honours degree in English or a Major in Theatre. Normally, assistantships are not available to first-year students. A call for applications goes out to all majors in March of each year from the Departmental Office. If you are successful, you will be notified by email in July.

Duties of a Student Assistant may include working with individual faculty members on research projects, production of the Department newsletter, library ordering or research, website updates, coordination of readings or conferences, or staging of the fall and winter theatre productions. Students generally find the experience of working with a faculty member one-on-one a valuable learning experience and a useful item to add to their resumes.

Honours Summer Research Awards

On a competitive basis, Acadia University offers summer fellowships to assist students in research for their Honours theses. A call for applications will be sent out in the spring. For more information go to the Research and Graduate Studies website.
