ENGL 3293 X1 - Kevin Whetter
RENAISSANCE DRAMA
As its title is meant to indicate, Renaissance Drama focusses predominantly on non-Shakespearean drama from the English Renaissance. We will, however, probably read one Shakespeare play, plus six or seven works from his near contemporaries and successors. The goal is thus to learn more about the culture that produced Shakespeare, but also, equally importantly, to read a number of entertaining plays that are valuable and entertaining for their own sake. Although the exact list might change a bit between now and the Autumn, I anticipate reading two or three revenge tragedies, a couple of comedies, and at least one history play. This focus will allow us to explore a representative range of genres, authors, and materials.
