Victorian Literature and Culture

This course introduces students to fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction prose of the Victorian Age (1837-1901).  The course emphasizes the cultural context of literary production at this time and is organized thematically to reflect some of the more important philosophical, social, and political movements of the period.  We will consider literature under the rubrics of Marriage and Domestic Life, Education, Science and Religion, Morality and Prostitution, and Work and Poverty.  Prerequisite:  ENGL 1404 (ENGL 1413/ENGL 1423) with a minimum grade of C-.
