Mads Murray Successfully Defends Their Thesis
Congratulations to Mads Murray for successfully defending their thesis on 14 July. Entitled “The ‘t’ is not silent: transgender representation in children’s picture books,” Mads’ thesis explores how transgender picture books (TPBs) manage gender representation, concluding that “even when TPBs try to challenge the narratives of binary gender identity, gender norms, and gender essentialism, they end up continuing to reinforce and uplift white supremacist cisheteropatriarchal power through validating and affirming Western colonial gender ideals.” Mads’ thesis was nominated for the Acadia Outstanding Masters Research Award for the Faculty of Arts. Mads will be attending University of Calgary for the PhD in the fall.
