Teaching:
My research focuses on the question of how literature can help us understand our experiences of illness and healing in a time of unprecedented biotechnological and social change surrounding medicine and medical treatment.
This interest guides my versions of English 1413/1423 and 1213/1223 where we will read a range of texts that explore how the ways we understand ourselves as individuals often involves ideas of what it means to be “healthy,” “well,” and “able”.
At the same time, in my courses students will develop the analytical, research, and rhetorical skills necessary to engage in scholarly conversations—both on paper and in the classroom. Students will practice methods of academic writing as we evaluate, challenge, and respond to texts in essays and creative self-reflective assignments. In this way, students will learn and practice a dependable, manageable, and reproducible writing process that allows them to develop and express their own ideas.
I believe that writing is a skill—not an innate talent—that anyone can learn and improve through hard work. My hope is that students will learn to see writing as a means of discovery, a process of continual refinement of ideas and their expression.
