Strategies for Reading Literature
There are four general objectives to this course. The first is to help you acquire a historical understanding of theories of literary criticism. The second is to help you develop skills in reading theoretical texts and in critical analysis. This consists in being able to trace the different claims of an argument throughout a text with the view to using theoretical concepts as tools of literary analysis, and/or to assessing the validity of these concepts. The third is to put theory into practice by analyzing literature, film, and the visual arts from different theoretical standpoints. Finally, the overall objective is not to impose or embrace ideas, but to grasp and use them critically.
